The EU issued a new directive EU (2022/2380) - Latest Interpretations | ZONSAN
As early as 2009, the EU has been committed to promoting the harmonization process of charging interfaces for consumer electronics to reduce waste of resources and promote the green process, while universalizing charging accessories to bring consumers a better charging experience. The European Parliament voted in plenary on October 4, 2022 to make the USB-C interface the universal charging standard for small electronic devices by the end of 2024.
Recently, the European Union issued a new directive EU (2022/2380) to supplement the charging communication protocol, charging interface, consumer information and other related requirements, this regulation is not just for a country, but for all EU member states to implement, products sold in EU member states are required to comply with its provisions.
The scope of the equipment involved and the implementation time
The law applies to devices including newly manufactured cell phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, portable game consoles, portable speakers, e-books, keyboards, mice, navigators, wireless headsets, and laptops. With the exception of laptops, the regulation will become mandatory in EU member states on December 28, 2024. Notebooks will be mandatory from April 28, 2026.
The regulated electronic products need to be equipped with a USB-C interface and be able to charge using a USB-C cable, both the interface and the cable need to comply with the "EN / IEC 62680-1-3:2021 Part 1-3" standard.
When the charging power of the device is greater than 5V3A (15W), regardless of whether other charging protocols are used, the power supply requirements of the "EN / IEC 62680-1-2:2021 Part 1-2" standard need to be met, which means that the USB Power Deliver (USB PD) is fully supported. The new information label
New information label
In order to provide consumers with clear information about the charging power specifications of the device, all regulated products are required to display or provide a label of the type shown in the figure. On the left is the label style when the device comes with a charger, and on the right is the label style when it does not come with a charger.
In addition, the label needs to have the device power specifications printed on it, XX for the minimum power specification (watts) required to operate the device and YY for the power specification (watts) to achieve the maximum charging speed when the device is operating. If the device supports the USB Power Deliver charging standard, the word "USB PD" should also be printed on the label.
ZONSAN Summary
As the end of 2024 draws near, the years of consumer electronics interface standards have finally been unified to USB-C, another big change since the MicroUSB interface was unified more than a decade ago.
The EU has issued a new directive EU (2022/2380) that clearly sets out the range of electronic products involved in the unification of interfaces, covering almost all mainstream devices on the market, and the interfaces and cables need to be designed in accordance with the relevant regulations. In addition, the new directive also adds information labels, allowing users to know at a glance whether the device comes with a charger, the minimum charging power of the device, the maximum charging power, whether it supports the USB PD charging standard, easy to read so that consumers can simply be informed of the device charging-related, easy to buy.
